For anything beyond a quick spin, yes. A quality chamois reduces saddle pressure and friction, which is what makes longer rides comfortable rather than something you endure. Our Chamois Guide explains how the padding is built.
Bibs remove waistband pressure and keep the chamois centered, which matters more the longer you ride, and they are what most road riders end up preferring. Shorts are simpler for quick changes and indoor sessions. Same chamois either way, so it is really a decision about the upper. The Shorts & Bibs Guide walks through it.
No. The chamois is designed to sit directly against skin. Underwear adds seams and traps moisture against you, which is exactly what causes chafing on a long ride.
Snug enough that the chamois stays centered when you pedal, without pinching at the waist or hem. If the fabric wrinkles or the pad shifts, size down; if it digs, size up. Compression is doing real work here, not just fitting closely. Check the Size & Fit Guide if you are between sizes.
Match it to ride length. SELECT Levitate™ covers everyday rides, ELITE Levitate™ is dual-density for high-mileage training, and PRO Levitate™ is triple-density for race pace and long endurance days. There is also a Minimal Chamois for short rides and liner shorts.
For gravel and long days in the saddle, yes. Cargo pockets on the thigh and back hold fuel, tools, and a phone securely without bounce, which means you can carry what you need without a pack. On shorter road rides the extra pockets add little.
Wash after every ride, cold water on a gentle cycle, no fabric softener, and air-dry rather than tumble-dry. Heat and softener are what break down the elastic and the chamois foam. Chamois hygiene is a health matter, not just a comfort one, so start every ride in a clean pair.
