A vest, or gilet, blocks wind on your core while letting heat escape out the back, and it packs down small enough to live in a jersey pocket, which makes it the most versatile layer for variable days. A jacket adds sleeve coverage and more protection for sustained cold, wind, or rain. Many riders carry a packable vest year-round and add a jacket as conditions demand.

Windproof jackets, like the Barrier line, cut chill and pack small but aren't built for sustained rain. WxB® jackets add a waterproof membrane and seam-sealed construction that keeps you dry in real downpours and wheel spray. If your rides are cool and dry, a wind layer is usually enough; if you ride through storms, choose WxB®.

AmFIB® pieces are built for the harshest winter road conditions, where you need warmth and weather protection together rather than stacking a shell over a mid-layer. Yes. Our WxB® jackets use ride-breathable membranes that let sweat vapor escape so you don't overheat on hard efforts. Pair one with a wicking base layer and open the vents on climbs to manage moisture from the inside out. There is always a trade-off between waterproofing and airflow, so use the zips.

A breathable vest is ideal roughly from the mid-60s°F down into the 50s, and for early starts and long descents when your core needs protection but your arms don't. Layer it over a jersey and add arm warmers to stretch its range further into the cold.

For the coldest rides, look to AmFIB® and insulated winter jackets, which combine wind and water protection with real insulation. Build a full cold-weather system by adding a thermal base layer underneath and tights or bib tights below.

Close all zips, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and skip fabric softener, which clogs the membrane and the water-repellent finish. If the care label allows, a low tumble-dry or a warm iron through a cloth helps reactivate the DWR so water beads up again. If the jacket feels clammy, it is usually the outer face wetting out rather than the membrane failing.
