Men's Gravel Cycling Shorts & Bib Shorts

Road shorts are built around one variable: pavement. Gravel shorts have to account for much more. Hours of sustained effort over rough surfaces, gear to carry without a dedicated pack, a chamois that handles terrain transmitting far more vibration than tarmac, and a fit that stays put through a hike-a-bike or a position change on a variable gradient.

Shorts, Bibs, or Cargo Bibs

Bib shorts: over-shoulder straps remove waistband pressure and keep the chamois centered across long, seated efforts. The default for gravel distance.

Waist shorts: simpler for quick changes and for bikepacking days when you want to wear a casual top without thinking about straps.

Cargo bibs: thigh pockets sit low on the leg, away from the waist and pedal stroke, with interior mesh security so nothing bounces loose. Bib pockets take the secure essentials, leaving jersey pockets free for food.

Shell shorts: unpadded outers worn over a liner or bib you already trust, adding weather resistance and a casual look.

Browse the unpadded outers in shell shorts, or the padded liners to wear underneath in shorts with liners.

Which Chamois?

SELECT Levitate™: the everyday comfort tier, for gravel rides up to a couple of hours.

ELITE Levitate™ 3D: dual-density with a Suspension Core™ that damps sustained chatter before it reaches the body. The usual answer for high-mileage gravel, where vibration is constant rather than occasional.

PRO Levitate™ 3D: triple-density with finer zonal variation, a 1:1® Boundary Layer top sheet, and Infinite Edge™ transitions. For gravel racing and ultra-distance.

Minimal Chamois: the lightest padding, for short rides and liner shorts worn under shells.

Why Gravel Asks More of a Chamois

On gravel, chatter is sustained rather than occasional, so a pad has to absorb vibration continuously rather than cushion the odd impact. Multi-density construction provides targeted support at the sit bones without over-padding softer tissue, which is where single-density pads start creating pressure and hot spots deep into a long, rough effort. The Levitate™ platform is built around that problem. Read the Chamois Guide and the Shorts & Bibs Guide to match a density to your rides.

Fabric & Weather Technology

Armourtech CORDURA® nylon: combines cycling-specific compression and stretch with CORDURA® abrasion durability. On gravel, where crash risk and ground contact are higher than on road, a body fabric that survives contact without degrading is a genuine upgrade.

PI Dry® C0: a hydrophobic treatment applied at the fiber level rather than coated on top, so it does not wear off. The C0 formula is PFAS-free. Water and mud bead and roll off instead of saturating the fabric, with no membrane to trap heat on hard efforts.

BioViz™: reflective placement visible to 100 meters, concentrated on the moving parts of your body. Gravel routes rarely respect daylight hours.

Which Tier?

Quest: the comfortable everyday option for newer and recreational gravel riders.

Attack: a closer race-ready cut in lighter fabric for hard training and fast gravel.

PRO: the most compressive and technical, with the most advanced chamois.

Fit & Sizing

Snug and supportive with even compression, close enough that there is no excess fabric bunching in the riding position but not tight enough to restrict movement. Bib straps should lie flat without digging at the shoulders, and the chamois should sit centered when you are in the riding position rather than standing. Raw-edge leg bands should transition to skin without leaving a pressure line. Use our Size & Fit Guide.

Finish the Kit

Pair with a gravel jersey, a base layer for tempo swings, gravel shoes built for time off the bike, and socks. When it turns cold, switch to tights & bib tights, and read the Gravel Cycling Guide for the wider picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about PEARL iZUMi products.

  • Gravel shorts prioritize durability, cargo storage, and a chamois tuned for vibration-heavy terrain. Road shorts lean toward aero efficiency, lighter fabrics, and minimal bulk. The difference shows up most on rides past about three hours over mixed surfaces, where road shorts leave you reaching for a pack and managing pressure points that a gravel-specific pad addresses directly.

  • Bibs for most gravel distance: the straps remove waistband pressure and keep the chamois centered over long seated efforts. Waist shorts are simpler for quick changes and suit bikepacking days when you want to wear a casual top without straps underneath. Same chamois either way, so it's really a decision about the upper.

  • They're one of the most practical gravel-specific upgrades. Thigh pockets sit low on the leg, away from the waist and pedal stroke, and interior mesh security keeps items from bouncing loose on rough terrain. The practical result is that bib pockets take the secure essentials and your jersey pockets stay free for food. On rides under two hours the benefit is small.

  • Match it to ride length. ELITE Levitate™ 3D is the usual answer for high-mileage gravel: dual-density with a Suspension Core™ that damps sustained chatter. Step up to PRO Levitate™ 3D for racing and ultra-distance, or down to SELECT for everyday rides. More padding is not the same as more comfort.

  • PI Dry® is our hydrophobic treatment, applied at the fiber level rather than coated on the surface, so it does not wear off with washing the way a topical DWR does. The C0 formula is PFAS-free, replacing traditional fluorinated treatments. Water and mud bead and roll off instead of soaking in, with no membrane to trap heat on hard efforts. See Water Protection for the full range.

  • Yes, and many riders use one pair for both. The chamois performs on pavement exactly as it does on dirt, and the compressive body fabric manages moisture the same way. The cargo pockets are either a convenience or a non-factor depending on how much you carry. The more abrasion-resistant fabrics run slightly heavier than a dedicated road short, so for road racing a race-oriented short is still the better call.

  • Snug with even compression, no excess fabric bunching in the riding position, and straps that lie flat without digging at the shoulders. The chamois should sit centered when you are in the riding position, not when standing, so check the fit on the bike rather than in front of a mirror. Our Size & Fit Guide has the measurements.
