On gravel, where you're often far from shelter when the weather turns, a packable vest is the most-carried layer: it blocks wind on your core, stuffs into a jersey pocket or hip pack, and weighs almost nothing. A jacket adds sleeve coverage and more protection for sustained wind, cold, or rain. Many gravel riders carry a vest on most rides and add a jacket when the forecast is uncertain, building it onto a gravel jersey and base layer.

Windproof shells, built on the Barrier platform, cut chill and pack down small but aren't meant for steady rain. Waterproof jackets, marked WxB, add seam-sealed protection for real downpours and the spray kicked up off wet dirt roads. For cool, dry gravel days a wind layer is usually enough; if your routes run through unpredictable weather far from home, the waterproof option is the safer carry.

Close all zips, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and skip fabric softener, which clogs the membrane and the water-repellent finish. If the care label allows, a low tumble-dry or a warm iron through a cloth helps reactivate the DWR so water beads up again instead of soaking in.
