Ride 365® - Cold Weather

Cold Weather Cycling Gear: What to Wear Cycling in Winter

Keep riding when it's freezing. This is your guide to cold weather cycling gear and what to wear cycling in winter: an insulating, wind-sealing layering system that keeps your core warm and your extremities working.

What to Wear in the Cold

Base: a thermal base layer to move sweat and add warmth.

Mid & shell: an insulated or windproof jacket over the base; thermal bib tights for the legs.

Extremities: insulated or lobster gloves, thermal socks, windproof shoe covers, and a cap or headband under the helmet.

Seal the wind: a windproof front stops the chill that heavy but breathable layers let through.

How Cold Is Too Cold?

There's no hard cutoff. With the right layers, many riders go well below freezing. Below about 30°F, prioritize wind protection and keeping hands, feet, and head warm, and dress to start slightly cool since you'll warm into the ride.

The Technology Behind It

Shop the thermal fleece, Alpha, and AmFIB fabrics here in our Insulation collection. Cold weather is one season in the year-round Ride 365 system.

  • Use insulated or lobster gloves, thermal socks, and windproof shoe covers. Sealing your core so blood keeps flowing to the extremities matters just as much as the gloves themselves.

  • Base layer to move sweat, an insulating mid for warmth, and a windproof or waterproof shell on top. Use a base layer so sweat can't chill you, and dress to start slightly cool.

  • Usually trapped sweat or wind. A wicking base layer keeps insulation dry, and a windproof front stops the chill that heavy but breathable layers let through.

  • AmFIB is a wind- and water-resistant insulated fabric platform built for the coldest rides, used in winter jackets, bib tights, gloves, and covers. Find it throughout our Insulation collection.
