When the temperature drops, ditch the bulk and reach for the PRO Alpha Layer—your high-performance solution for warmth that breathes. Designed to wear under your favorite shell or as a solo layer, this top uses advanced insulation to keep you cozy through changing temps without trapping sweat.

Constructed with 80 g Polartec® Alpha® Direct active insulation, it continuously releases excess body heat before saturation can build—giving you ideal temperature control on climbs, descents, and everything in between. Lightweight yet effective, it even earned the Polartec® Apex Award for innovation in technical layering.

A YKK® semi-locking front zipper lets you dial in ventilation on the fly, and features like three bellowed rear pockets allow for secure storage—whether used solo or worn under a jacket.

Reviews

ALPHAlicious

"Like sweet and sour (two great taste that go well together) this layer is both warm and cool 😎. The pockets do as they should and are a welcomed addition. A new favorite that will accompany me on TD 2026."

— Kevin E. (5/5)

Makes Cold Days Enjoyable

"The best piece of cold weather kit I didn't know I needed. Intended as a mid-layer, the PRO Alpha helps retain more body heat under your outer shell to keep you warm in colder conditions. It almost works too well (but that's a good thing). The size XS was not available so I purchased a size S. It is slightly large (I'm 5'6", 125 lb. , 35 inch chest), but as a mid-layer the sizing is fine for the intended use."

— Trent T. (5/5)

Weird Fabric

"This was likely on sale due to the unique, somewhat odd fabric… likely experimental on the company’s part and on sale because ie wasn’t selling. I ordered online di couldn’t appreciate it guilt and won’t have purchased it had I seen it in person. It’s hard to describe slightly fuzzy and porous. Don’t really see its role in a cycling wardrobe."

— Charles K. (2/5)

Nice but niche

"Very well made and nice fitting. Not the most versatile piece though. Really best as mid layer in really cold temps. It probably says this in the product description somewhere. For me it will be a mid layer under light shell (like the pro barrier or pro rain jacket) when temps drop below 40F, and is perhaps moist. That said, I usually use the Pro Winter Jacket for those temps. And this piece has a tighter more race fit than anything mentioned above, keeps me just as warm and is more durable. So again, the Alpha layer is nice but really limited."

— evan h. (4/5)

Why did it take so long to show up?

"The PRO Alpha Layer is a; It's about time product. Why it took so long to come about. I make sure I tell every cyclists I know when I see them about this base layer/jersey: It's got pockets."

— Neil P. (5/5)

Men’s pro alpha layer

"Good quality. Ran a little short so it was returned for the next larger size."

— Mary M. (3/5)

Great insulation

"Polartec alpha direct is the best insulation fabric I've ever used. Even better than wool. It barely get wet with sweat so it's never clammy. I wore it today under a rain shell when temps were in the 30's and a constant drizzle of rain. Warm and dry the whole time."

— Nigel G. (5/5)

The ultimate midlayer

"This sophisticated piece requires the right shell to perform at its best, I prefer a quantum pertex shell, one with a bit of alpha insulation of its own (hint). It fits close but not tight, so you can just feel the air moving in the insulation. This unlikely combination keeps me warm and dry down to freezing. At the end of a winter's day riding in the mountains, this midlayer is bone dry. That is what you want, and so rarely get. In short, amazing!"

— Adam R. (5/5)

Must-have peice!

"This is a must-have piece for anyone riding in colder climates. It is a very good layer that keeps you warm and more importantly, dry. It is very warm and breathable. When paired with a shell on top and a base-layer underneath, it is the ultimate setup for riding around freezing temperatures. 100% recommend!"

— Andrew L. (5/5)

A great base layer for

"A great base layer for cold weather. The material doesn’t absorb sweat, so you stay warm even on descents."
