Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about PEARL iZUMi products.

  • A typical trail kit is a breathable jersey, a shell short with a padded liner (or a bib short), grippy shoes, and gloves, plus knee protection for rougher terrain. The goal is durable, sweat-wicking gear with room to move and no snag points at the saddle. Build a full setup from jerseys, shorts, shoes, and protection.

  • Shorts breathe best in heat and for high-output efforts, while pants add protection from brush, dirt, and cool or wet weather. Many riders run shorts most of the year and switch to pants (or add knee warmers) once temperatures drop.

  • A shell short with a removable liner is the most versatile trail setup: durable outer fabric, cargo pockets, and easy nature stops. Bib shorts shine on long, seated climbs and smoother terrain where you want the chamois held perfectly in place. See shorts with liners to build the two-piece system.

  • Clipless shoes (2-bolt SPD) maximize pedaling efficiency and control on rough climbs, while flats give you freedom to dab, jump, and learn new features. Plenty of riders switch based on terrain and season. Match your choice with men's or women's MTB shoes.

  • For technical trails, rock gardens, or bike-park laps, yes. Light, pedal-friendly knee and elbow guards add real confidence without much bulk and breathe well enough to climb in. Browse Cycling Protection to match coverage to your riding.

  • Start with a moisture-wicking base and jersey, then carry a packable wind or rain shell you can throw on for exposed ridgelines and shady descents. Vent zips on the climbs and close up before you drop in, so you stay dry from both the inside and the weather.

  • MTB gear should skim the body and move with you, with enough room for pads, hems that clear knee guards, and nothing that catches on the saddle. If you're between sizes, check our Size & Fit Guide.
