Power on the Bike. Grip off It.
Gravel shoes with efficient stiffness, secure fit, and confident traction—made for fast pedals, rough surfaces, and hike-a-bike sections.
A road shoe has one job; men’s gravel bike shoes have three: transfer power efficiently on the bike, grip confidently when you’re off it, and hold up to the riding that chews through terrain other shoes weren’t built for. PEARL iZUMi’s men’s gravel cycling shoes are engineered around all three, with sole technologies, closure systems, and uppers chosen specifically for long hours over rough and variable ground.
The X-Alp Gravel is built for riders who split time between gravel roads, XC trails, and all-day adventures where the terrain doesn’t stay predictable. The 1:1® Next Step Nylon composite sole is the centerpiece, engineered so neither pedaling stiffness nor walkability has to give ground. TPU lugs provide real grip on dirt and gravel when you step off the bike, and a reinforced toe bumper handles errant rocks and technical hike-a-bike sections. A seamless, perforated synthetic leather upper keeps things breathable and durable, and a short EVA heel insert delivers noticeable vibration damping on long rides over rough roads. A single L6 BOA® closure with sequence routing provides even, micro-adjustable pressure across the instep with one quick dial.
Expedition Shoes are the go-to for riders who lean into adventure: bikepacking routes, unpredictable terrain, and multi-hour rides where comfort and off-bike capability matter as much as power transfer. The 1:1® Next Step Nylon composite sole delivers efficient pedaling performance with enough flex for hike-a-bike sections and coffee stops. A dual-closure system pairs a BOA® L6E Fit System at the midfoot with a forefoot strap for independent zonal adjustment, eliminating hot spots without sacrificing stability. A heavily perforated synthetic leather upper enhances breathability, soft TX lace guides reduce pressure across the top of the foot, and an EVA heel insert dampens road vibration over long miles. The reinforced toe bumper handles rock strikes and rough conditions without complaint.
For riders who want road-shoe efficiency without giving up gravel capability, the Expedition PRO is the answer. The 1:1® EX PRO Carbon sole delivers uncompromising power transfer, the kind reserved for race-focused road shoes, while TPU lugs and a reinforced toe bumper handle the inevitable hike-a-bike and trail debris. Dual BOA® L6C dials give independent mid and forefoot adjustment, and Soft TX lace guides eliminate pressure points for a comfortable fit over all-day efforts. The perforated synthetic leather upper uses bonded construction to reduce bulk and improve breathability. A water-resistant upper shrugs off mud and spray, and a mud-shedding open tread design keeps the sole from packing up on technical terrain.
Gravel demands a shoe that functions across a wider range of conditions than road or mountain alone. Here’s what’s built into PEARL iZUMi gravel cycling shoes and why each element matters on a long day out.
The 1:1® Next Step Nylon composite sole is PEARL iZUMi’s purpose-built gravel sole platform, found in the X-Alp Gravel and Expedition shoes. The design solves the fundamental tension in gravel footwear: a sole stiff enough to transfer power efficiently at the pedal, but flexible enough to walk confidently on dirt, gravel, and technical terrain. TPU lugs integrated into the outsole add grip for off-bike sections without the bulk of a full mountain bike tread. It’s the sole for riders who want to minimize compromises across a full day of mixed riding.
The EX PRO Carbon sole is the performance tier of PEARL iZUMi’s gravel sole lineup, used in the Expedition PRO. The carbon construction maximizes stiffness and minimizes energy loss at the pedal (comparable to a dedicated road shoe) while TPU wrapping at the toe and heel and a mud-shedding open tread address the durability and traction demands of off-road conditions. For riders who want the power output of a road shoe with the trail-capable construction gravel requires, the EX PRO Carbon is where that line gets drawn.
All three men’s gravel shoes in the lineup use the BOA® Fit System, and for good reason. On long rides where foot volume shifts, especially over varied terrain and temperature changes, the ability to micro-adjust tension on the fly without stopping is a real functional advantage. The L6 dial used across the lineup provides even pressure distribution and releases with a single pull. The Expedition and Expedition PRO add a second closure point (a forefoot strap and dual BOA® dials, respectively), allowing independent zonal adjustability to dial in both the midfoot and forefoot without one affecting the other.
Gravel roads transmit more road chatter than pavement, and over four or five hours, that adds up. PEARL iZUMi addresses this in the X-Alp Gravel and Expedition shoes with an EVA insert at the heel that absorbs vibration before it reaches the foot. It’s a small detail that makes a measurable difference on long days over rough surfaces.
The right shoe depends on how you ride and what you ask of your footwear:
Primarily gravel and XC trails, mixed terrain, long days: The X-Alp Gravel is the versatile all-arounder: walkable, durable, and efficient.
Bikepacking, adventure riding, unpredictable terrain: Our Expedition Shoes add dual-zone closure and a more refined fit system for all-day comfort when the route is long and conditions are variable.
Fast gravel events, XC racing, riders who want road-shoe power on dirt: The Expedition PRO’s carbon sole and dual BOA® system are built for riders who don’t want to leave performance on the table.
Pro Tip: Pair these with gravel-specific bib shorts, a matching gravel jersey, and cycling socks built for the demands of long off-road miles.

Our men's gravel shoes are compatible with 2-bolt SPD cleats, which is the standard for gravel and mountain bike pedals. This is distinct from 3-bolt road cleats, which use a wider cleat interface optimized for maximum stiffness but aren't walkable. The 2-bolt SPD system recesses the cleat into the sole, which is what allows for the off-bike walkability that gravel riding demands. If you're coming from road cycling and switching to a gravel-specific shoe, you'll also need to switch pedals unless you already run SPD.
Both shoes share the same adventure-oriented DNA, but they're tuned differently. The Expedition uses the 1:1® Next Step Nylon composite sole, which balances pedaling efficiency with walkability and flex. The Expedition PRO uses the stiffer 1:1® EX PRO Carbon sole, which performs more like a road shoe sole, maximizing power transfer at the cost of some flexibility. For bikepacking and adventure riding where you'll be walking frequently, the standard Expedition is the more comfortable choice for all-day riding. For gravel racing, XC events, or riders who prioritize watt efficiency above all else, the PRO's carbon sole earns its place.
Clean mud off with a damp sponge while it's still fresh; dried mud is harder on the materials. Stuff the inside with paper to absorb moisture and help the shoe hold its shape while drying. Air-dry at room temperature only; do not use a dryer or radiator, or leave them in a hot car. Extreme direct heat can dry out and crack the synthetic leather upper and sole materials, and will void the warranty. Scrub the outsole with a soft brush to keep the TPU lugs clear. Never clean cycling shoes in a washing machine.
